This book is for single people, including the divorced, the widowed, and the never-married. It aims to offer several things: understanding, purpose, and a reminder that you’re never truly alone.
Hi, I’m Catherine Spearnak
Here to Show You Wholeness Without a Wedding.
I’ve dated since my teens and into my forties. I’ve asked men out, been turned down, said yes, said no, and fallen in love — but never with someone who loved me back the same way.
For a long time, that hurt. But now I know I’m not broken.
That’s what The Spinsters is about: living fully, even without a ring.

HERE’S HOW I WANT TO HELP YOU
It’s not that I haven’t tried to be married. I’ve been dating since my teenage years and well into my forties. I’ve asked men out. Some said yes. Some said no. I’ve fallen in love — sometimes deeply — and yes, men have fallen in love with me, just not always at the same time.
For years, I thought that meant something was wrong with me. But over time, I learned I wasn’t broken — I was just living a different story. Through The Spinsters, I want to help you embrace your own story, too, fully, freely, and unapologetically.

I’m 67 years old, and I live in The Cascades — a recreational home community for people 55 and over. Despite my age, I would still like to be married. But the truth is, I’m a happy singleton.
Everyone here is retired, so the management keeps us busy. We play poker, chess, Bingo, cards, and do crafts. We take trips, invite musical entertainers in, and run a small gift shop. I volunteer in the gift shop, and I also sing karaoke, play poker, and join in on Bingo. We’re served three meals a day — and the best part? No clean-up.
That piqued my interest. I was one of them.
Before retirement, I worked as a journalist, reporting for several newspapers in Southern California and freelancing for the Los Angeles Times. So, I thought: why not investigate this trend? Why not write a book?
The Spinsters is mainly for single folks. That includes the never married, the divorced, and the widowed — because everyone is single in some way.
My goal is not very complicated: I want to reveal that single individuals are not condemned to longevity. A single person can live a full life with community, creativity, and curiosity.
By sitting at home and even watching television you will get lonely. However, when you go out and connect with the world, you will discover much is there to be discovered.
By the end of this book, I hope you’ll learn to live alone — and love it.
